Bolhão

2015
Mercado do Bolhão, Porto, Portugal
Bolhão Market, in the beating heart of Porto, Portugal, has roots reaching back to 1839. The building we see today, completed in 1914, is a proud example of neoclassical architecture, its stonework carrying the patina of time. Yet Bolhão is far more than a marketplace; it is a living cultural icon, animated above all by the women who inhabit it. Their voices, sharp, witty, unapologetically loud, cut through the bustle and give the market its unmistakable character.

This series of photographs explores the tension at the core of Bolhão: the worn, time-scarred shell of the market set against the fierce vitality of the women who keep it alive. Through these images, I’m interested in honouring their resilience, humour and presence, the way they infuse a historic space, scarred by change and modernisation, with daily acts of care, resistance and sheer life.
